Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a national nonprofit organization advocating for healthier lifestyles by creating a nationwide network of public trails, many from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) advocates at the local, state and national level for policies that support trails and greenways for transportation, recreation, conservation, and as an integral part of livable communities.
Job summary: The Program Coordinator works closely with the Research Director to operate the National Transportation Enhancements Clearinghouse (NTEC). NTEC is a technical assistance service sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and RTC. NTEC provides information to the public about the Transportation Enhancements (TE) program, the primary federal source of funds for pedestrian and bicycle facilities, among others. Because NTEC is operated with federal funds, NTEC staff does not participate in any of RTC's advocacy efforts.
The Program Coordinator is responsible for providing technical information to the public about the TE program; maintaining the website, including the image library; researching TE projects around the country; producing NTEC's major publications, including the yearly spending report; and managing and updating NTEC's TE project database.
Job Location: This position is located in RTC's national office in Washington, D.C. West End/Foggy Bottom area, and is easily accessible by Metro's Red lines.
Job Duties:
- Become an expert on the TE program in order to provide excellent technical assistance to the public via phone and email
- Write, edit and publish new TE-related publications or updated versions of previous publications
- Contribute to annual update of NTEC's national TE project lists and reports
- Research and write TE project case studies for Web site and publications
- Maintain and manage NTEC's customer database, TE contact database, and TE contact listserv
- Stay informed about the TE program by tracking TE-related news and monitoring legislative and administrative changes to the program at the state and federal level
- Help prepare and execute an annual 2-day TE Seminar for 50 participants
- Occasional administrative responsibilities and NTEC duties as assigned
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in urban planning/transportation plus 1-2 years work related experience preferred.
- Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and research
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access
- Experience designing/editing websites
- Interest in transportation reform, public policy, urban planning, and the environment
Work Environment: Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level with some travel required.
